<strong>Course Overview</strong>
This course is designed to improve students’ understanding and teaching skills of Chinese phonology. It provides a systematic theory of the phonology of Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua), including vowels, consonants, initials, finals, tones, syllabic structures, sandhi, prosodic phonetics. It focuses on the combination of theoretical knowledge with practical ability in phonology and its teaching. It will also apply a comparative method between Chinese and English phonologies for the special needs of U.S. students.

<p><strong>Course Overview</strong><br />
This course is designed to improve students’ understanding and teaching skills of Chinese phonology. <p><strong>Course Overview</strong></p>
<p>This course chronologically introduces Chinese literature from Pre-Qin to Qing Dynasty and will highlight important literary schools, classical writers and their works. The beta online course will focus on Chinese ancient mythology until the South &amp; North Period (around 300 C.E.).</p>
<p><strong>Professor Gu, Weilie,</strong> a longtime ECNU faculty member and Vice Dean of the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, ECNU. He taught Chinese language at the Institute de Management Europe-Asia (ISUGA) in France during 1997-98 and his major publications include <em>Chinese Culture:  A General Introduction (2008) </em>and<em> Chinese Ancient Literature (2006).</em></p>
<p><strong>Dr. Yu, Bei,</strong> (Ph.D. in Literature, Fudan University) an ECNU faculty member of the Global Center for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, will be facilitating this online course.</p>
