From July 30 through August 21, 2009, Teach China will lead a group of 16 educators through China to explore evidence of Confucian influence on Chinese state structure and daily life and its development through the ages.  Highlights will include a trip to Qufu (Confucius' hometown); climbing the sacred Mount Tai; trips to urban centers like Beijing, Nanjing, and Shanghai; and exploring the Wu Liang Shrines in Shandong Province.

Participants are invited to share questions, observations, and resources as they prepare for the trip, and to report back along the trip and after.

Hi Pearl,

It's hard to say without having witnessed how you responded.  Please just repost your question about Mount Tai and I'll do my best to answer it.

best regards,

Kevin

Hi Pearl,

We will likely take the cable car part of the way but the option of climbing the entire mountain will depend on time factors (i.e.when we arrive on the day we climb Mt.Tai ).  When we travel on bus it is a chartered bus so you will be able to leave things like a hat or a backpack on the bus while we are visiting a site.

(I'll post this on the other thread as well since it may not be apparent that it's related to the 2009 Summer Study Tour.)

Best regards,

Kevin

Hi Everyone,

Here's a link to a NY Times' Q&A with Nicholas Kristof about Tiananmen.

http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.c…..questions/

I believe this was from 6/3/2009 so it didn't take into account what has happened, or rather not-happened today(6/4/2009), as China had no ceremony to remember/honor/condemn the events from 20 years ago. China did block journalists from (video) reporting using plainclothes police with umbrellas to obstruct cameras; seemed to have shut down YouTube, Twitter, and some other online forums that may have had discussions regarding Tiananmen. I wonder what will happen when Li Peng passes away.

Anyway, I thought some of the responses were interesting.

Public radio (PRI) covered the anniversary today.  Good info.  You can access their accounts at their website.  The question that seemed to be the one on most listeners' minds—What's different?  Short answer—not much.

I'm reading "Zhou Enlai, the last perfect revolutionary" by Gao Wenqian. He slipped notes out from China and published this book 2007. has anyone else read it?

Hi! As I get ready, I'm also keeping in mind the small presents we have to bring with us.  Are candles ok??  I don't want to give anything taboo…

Hey comrades,  Just wanted to say what an amazing time I had these last few weeks.  The Teach China program was more exciting, educational and stimulating than I ever imagined and you guys were a big part of it.  Kevin and Marcy you were amazing.  Professor Yu, was as benevolent a teacher as Confucius himself!  See you October 3rd – Good luck with the start of school. Wink

Hi all-I wanted to insert all the group photos here but am not finding the way. I will post them on the Google "photo" Chinastudytour09 and list it as THE GROUP. That way if you have some, you can add to it.

What do I miss about the trip? Being able to ask  Kevin, Ren, Marcy and John questions almost 24 hours  day. I learned more in those 3 weeks than the dozens of courses I took or the dozens of books I read. When I got home, I googled and Youtubed even more and downloaded lots of Ping Tan. I really like it, and one of the videos on Youtube is of the guy we saw in Suzhou (he plays the 3 stringed instrument and has glasses).

Thank you all for being a really good group of highly motivated educators.

I created a blog of the Confucius China Study Tour 09. It's http://pearllau.wordpress.com I wrote from the hotels on our trip and my husband downloaded photos and inserted them. He had a copy of our itinerary and was ready to insert the pix.
