Hi Kevin or anyone else that can help,

Do we need a transformer or converter to be able to charge our computers, cameras, etc.?

Anyone know what will be needed?

Julie,

I read somewhere here that China uses 220v so we need an adapter plug. I guess make sure your electronics will work at 220 as well.

Dee

Yes, China does have a voltage of 220 V and a frequency of 50 Hz (U.S. is 120 V, 60 Hz).  Also, many outlets are designed for plugs radically different than the items you are likely to bring.  Having an adapter/converter would be wise.  KL

http://www.washington.edu/comp…..#computers  explains it well. My block on my cord says 100-240v, so all I need for the computer is an a daptor, but I'll need a converter for my camera, etc. I suppose it is something I can just get there but I think I'll just get it here.

Many newer camera battery chargers can handle a wide variety of voltages — you may only need a plug adapter and not a full converter. YOu might want to check the back of your charger (both my Nikon and Canon can handle a variety of charges).  Radio Shack sometimes carries a variety of foreign plug adapters. Thanks, BTW, for the link.

Thanks Karl. Target also has the adapters.

Hi Thalia

As Darci mentioned, we met for coffee last week.  It was nice to get to know someone before the trip :)   I would love to meet you too! v Let me know if you want to meet up-maybe the three of us can meet.  My email is carriefallon3@hotmail.com

As for getting to Newark, I am actually driving up and then flying back to DCA since I live in Arlington.

Hi Thalia and Carrie, I live 45 minutes north of DCin Frederick Co. MD,  and will also be driving up with my husband to NJ on Sunday.

I paid full price like a big looser!  But I wanted to guarantee that I had a seat since the last time I was in NYC we had difficulty getting seats…Broadway is experiencing their biggest season ever and the lines for tkts are enormous!  I am having problems downloading pix like KL did with his dogs…it doesn't like my URL's…Oh well!  I am so psyched about this entire summer!  See you oh so very soon…

Thanks- guess I'll have to take my chances and possibly find alternative (translation -free) entertainment I want to sae my money for China. I kow it is far easier to find free in DC (Love the Smithsonian) but I have a camera and a sketchbook and I'm pretty happy.  See you soon!

Hi folks. I am arriving in Newark early Sunday morning (around 8 am) and was hoping to drop off my suitcase at the hotel before going into the city to do "touristy" stuff. I am hoping that the hotel will be willing to let me eitheir check in a bit early or to at least let me store my bag.  I was wondering if there were anyone arriving a day or two early who wouldn't mind me temporarily store my suitcase if the hotel folks aren't too cooperative.  I could even wait until a little later if that could mean not schlepping my suitcase into NYC or paying extra for early check-in.  If anyone could be of help in this matter, it would be much appreciated.  I check this bulletin board regularly or you can send me an e-mail via the list we received.  Thanks in advance, Karl

Hi Karl,

This is Kevin — you can definitely store your bags at the hotel and then head on into the city.  Just let them know you are with the China Institute group and will be rooming there that evening.  Sorry, I thought I already answered this question but I lose track every once in a while….

Enjoy the Fourth of July in NYC.  There are lots of "free" things to do (there's the Macy fireworks, for example).  Village Voice has a decent events calendar for things in the city (http://www.villagevoice.com/calendar) or you can go to the city's own events page (http://www.nyc.com/events/).

see you next week,

KL

Hi everyone-

I will be arriving at the hotel Sat night approx 6p. If anyone needs a tourist buddy for Sat and Sunday please give me a call 214-738-6153 (I know no one else posted a phone number but I thought I would be the first) I'm down for anything really but would like to conserve my budget. I'm very excited to meet everyone – see you soon.

Everyone have fun packing tomorrow!  I'll be getting up early to get all of the laundry done.  I'm praying that it all comes in under the magic 20 kilos!  I'm looking forward to meeting all of you on Sunday and Monday.

Nicole,

Debbie Line is arriving about the same time and we plan to find fireworks. Call our room and join us! I have your cell number and look forward to meeting you and the rest of our "teammates".

Ni Hao Fellow NEH Participants,

Kath and I are spending our last evening in Xi'an here on China 360. Hope you've "packed light" for the flight to Beijing!  Our time in China has far exceeded my expectations, and Kath agrees. We're looking forward to seeing our lesson plans posted here, and hope you'll keep in touch once we're back home!
