Distinguished scholars, professors, curators, writers and artists present lectures, short courses, symposia, films and workshops that contextualize traditional and contemporary Chinese art and culture.
Lectures
1.5 hour lectures generally offered in the early evening covering a range of topics on (Chinese) history, art, culture and society.Short courses
Thematic courses
Comprised of 3-5 sessions offered in the early evening on (Chinese) poetry, literature and art.
Symposia
Multi-disciplinary 1/2 day and full day gatherings of leading scholars in the field of China Studies who discuss art, history, religion and philosophy, archaeology, anthropology, and literature. Current research and groundbreaking ideas are presented in a public forum which welcomes exchanges between scholars and the general public.
The symposia address traditional and contemporary topics ranging from Art and Practice: Buddhism in China from the 5th-9th Centuries; SHU: Reinventing Books in Contemporary Chinese Art; Meeting of Two Culture: China and Japan at Jingdezhen; and Providing for the Afterlife: “Brilliant Artifacts” from Shandong.
Eminent speakers have included Jonathan Spence (Yale University), Rosemary Scott (Formerly Percival David Foundation), Wu Hung (University of Chicago), Annette Juliano (Rutgers University), Robert Harrist (Columbia University) Maxwell Hearn (The Metropolitan Museum of Art), Michael Puett (Harvard University), and many more.
SINOMATHÈQUE Film Series
The Sinomathèque showcases contemporary and historical work of every genre originating from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Screenings are shown on DVD format and are followed by a moderated discussion.
Travel Workshop
These informative sessions prepare travelers for the physical and linguistic challenges frequently encountered while visiting China.
Art Salon: The Culture of Contemporary Chinese Art
Intimate discussions with artists, curators, critics and art historians about contemporary Chinese art from the perspective of social and political contexts, the relationship between contemporary Chinese and Western culture, and the bridge between traditional and contemporary Chinese art. Past Art Salons are available on DVD in both English and Mandarin.
