| Language Classes
China Institute offers a well-rounded, thorough approach to learning the Mandarin Chinese language while cultivating knowledge and appreciation for the culture it expresses. Students learn to read, write and speak from the first session, with all of these elements balanced throughout the entire course of study. All instructors are native speakers with advanced degrees and training. Curriculum is based on the text New Practical Chinese Reader, using pinyin romanization and simplified characters. Also offered are courses in Conversation, Grammar, Reading, Cantonese Chinese, and a course designed specifically for Heritage Learners. Classes run for ten weeks.
Studio Classes
Brush Painting
Courses provide training in the fundamentals of traditional painting, its principles, techniques, subject matter and style. Themes covered include landscapes, bird-and-flower paintings, insects and fish. Materials are supplied for beginners at the first class only.
Calligraphy
Students are taught the way of the brush and given an artistic and etymological introduction to China’s system of writing, which is an important key to understanding and appreciating Chinese art, history and culture. Knowledge of Chinese or brush technique are not necessary. Materials are supplied for beginners at the first class only.
Taijiquan
Taiji has been known to improve health and reduce stress through slow, gentle movements. This course teaches the Yang style of taijiquan short form of sixty postures developed by Grandmaster William C.C. Chen and the philosophy behind this ancient martial art. Alex Hing and his students are award-winning Push-hands competitors.
SINOMATHÈQUE Film Series
The Sinomathèque showcases contemporary and historical work of every genre originating from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Screenings are shown on DVD format and are followed by a moderated discussion.
