A treasure trove of spectacular images related to China and Japan from the 19th century to the end of the Second World War. Although the majority of the images deal with Japan — ranging from propaganda woodblock prints on the Sino-Japanese War created by Japanese artists to photographs by foreigners traveling through the country — many of the images are even more remarkable when compared with the contemporaneous artwork in China. This site also features an interesting visual breakdown on the creation of woodblock prints.

The imperial inspection tours of the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors were unique in Chinese history. Other emperors in other eras had from time to time completed a single inspection tour of the empire or made the epic journey to Mount Tai to worship Heaven, but the Qing emperors were the first to undertake multiple tours of inspection to all corners of the empire. In fact, these personal inspection tours were part of a strategy for extending and solidifying Manchu rule throughout the empire. During his 60-year reign, the Kangxi Emperor completed six southern inspection tours. The Kangxi Emperor’s grandson, the Qianlong Emperor, followed his example and also made six southern tours.

Columbia University’s Asia for Educators program has developed an excellent website using scrolls of the imperial inspection tours to explore issues related to the emperors and state, the economy, the art, and the inspection tours themselves.

Introduction and link to the website that Dr. Agnes Hsu demonstrated during her lecture at the China Institute’s workshop, Confucius: A Multi-disciplinary Approach.

Welcome to the interactive, virtual reality tour of the “Wu Family Shrines” cemetery site. Developed by Professor Anthony Barbieri-Low of the University of Pittsburgh, this tour is designed to give the viewer a sense of how this archaeological site in Shandong Province may have looked during the Han Dynasty, around 150-170 CE. The user can investigate each of the key monuments, read translations of the major inscriptions, and examine the pictorial carvings in the three reconstructed stone chambers at the site. Links to high-quality rubbings of the carvings and summaries of the stories and legends they allude to will help the user comprehend the visual world of a funerary complex from the second century in northeast China.

The Biography of Jing Ke is an account of the failed assassination of Ying Zheng, later known as Qin Shi Huang Di, the first emperor and unifier of China.

The story of Jing Ke was recorded by the Han Dynasty historian, Sima Qian, more than 2000 years ago in his work the Shiji. Sima Qian recounts how, following Ying Zheng’s military success in uniting the Han, Wei, and Chu kingdoms, Prince Dan of the Yan kingdom requested the help of Jing Ke in assassinating the emperor.

The assassination attempt fails, Jing Ke is killed, and a few years later Ying Zheng conquers the remaining states and unifies China in 221 BCE. This amazing story poignantly illustrates how one person’s actions can dramatically affect the course of history.

Excerpts of the story can be found here.

Teachers might also consider using the movie Hero to examine this crucial period in Chinese history.

This is the first comprehensive collection of twentieth-century Chinese literature. It covers genres from both before and after the Communist takeover in 1949. With a generation selection of new translations commissioned for this volume, here is the best short fiction, poetry, and essays from mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Including a lucid introduction by the editors and short biographies of the writers and poets, this anthology expertly guides readers to a better understanding of Chinese society and culture.
